It cannot be denied that Kelly Williams was the fire that helped the Sta. Lucia Realtors overcome the Alaska Aces in a strenous seven-game series in the semis. Williams' example by deed and the numbers that he produced inspired his teammates to follow his lead.
As a direct result, the Realtors is now gearing up for their first ever All-Filipino Finals appearance since joining the league in 1993.
“Kelly has been consistent in his game. He’s playing great,” noted SLR coach Boyet Fernandez of Williams, who averaged 21.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, 2 assists in 44.3 minutes in the semis. These numbers are far above the figures he produced in the elims (16.7 points, 11.1 rebounds, 1.6 assists in 36.6 minutes of action per game).
The only downside is that his field goal percentage slightly dipped from 39.5 percent in the elimination round to only 39.0 percent in the semis. However, this was expected since the Aces are always known to be effective in clamping down on individual players by taking them out of their comfort zones. Williams compensated by hustling more and inspiring his teammates to perform better.
“He’s been showing signs he can be a good all-around player who can play both offense and defense,” Fernandez added.
With the best-of-seven series against the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants about to start (Friday, 15 February), the Realtors should expect Williams to increase his numbers further.
