SLR vs RoS in Wildcard

Jeff Chan drained two dagger three-pointers down the stretch and Rain or Shine eliminated the Sta. Lucia Realtors with a 90-86 victory in their wildcard match-up last 24 January 2010 at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.

Sol Mercado had another excellent game but those pair of clutch threes from Chan lifted the spirits of the Elasto Painters and broke the spines of the Realtors.

Their first victory in three meetings against the Realtors this conference set up the Elasto Painters to a crucial face-off against Coca-Cola or Burger King on Wednesday for the last quarterfinal berth.

"We're just lucky we hit our shots. Eddie (Laure) hit a big shot in the end. But this win is really a team effort. Everybody stepped up," said Rain or Shine head coach Caloy Garcia afterwards.

Mercado poured a team-high 18 points, 14 of them coming in the second and third quarters as As Rain or Shine dictated the tempo of the game.

The Elasto Painters, who won just four games in the elims compared to 10 by Sta. Lucia, made just 40 percent of its shots in the first half but held the Realtors to a lower 33 percent to return to their locker room at the break holding on to a 40-34 lead.

Ryan Arana (13 points, five assists) and Mark Telan (nine points, three shotblocks) made their presence felt in the third quarter as the Elasto Painters held off repeated rallies by the Realtors and stayed ahead, 66-62, at the end of the period.

The setback was a painful one for the Realtors, who finished the eliminations just a win shy of a playoff for an outright quarterfinal berth.

It also looked like Sta. Lucia had seized momentum when it opened the fourth with three successive 3-pointers -- two from rookie Josh Urbiztondo -- and grabbed a 73-69 lead.

But the Elasto Painters were not about to fold up – and not a game this important.

A three-pointer by Mike Hrabak tied the count at 74-74 with 5:59 to play. In the ensuing play, Urbiztondo, who finished with 20 points, knocked another trey to put the Realtors back in front, 18 seconds later.

But the Realtors couldn't hold on to it, missing their next five attempts from the floor.

And Rain or Shine cashed in on the opportunity.

Chan's second three of the night tied the count at 77-77 with 4:39 to go. Then Eddie Laure hit an eight-footer from the left side for a two-point lead before Chan drained his last trey to give his team an 82-77 lead with 3:19 remaining.

Sta. Lucia never recovered from there although it provided a scare in the closing seconds when Urbiztondo made a long three over Mercado to pull the Realtors within 86-88 with 31 seconds left.

Rain or Shine withstood the last threat as Laure hit a floater in the lane over Marlou Aquino to stretch their lead to four with 11 seconds to play.

Kelly Williams led all scorers with 27 points but he struggled in the second half, going just 3 for 8 from the field.

Marlou Aquino, Sta. Lucia's veteran center, had a big night with 16 points, Joseph Yeo added 12 but starting guard Ryan Reyes managed just four points, going into foul trouble early that kept him on the bench on crucial stretches.

It was the first time since the 2008 Fiesta Conference the ninth seed booted out the No. 6-ranked squad in the wildcard plays when ironically it was Sta. Lucia who eliminated Alaska back then. (DBC)

SLR vs PF

Purefoods completed a four-game romp at the close of the KFC PBA Philippine Cup elimination phase Friday night, gaining automatic entry into the quarterfinals with an 88-78 win over Sta. Lucia Realty at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo last 23 January 2010.

The Giants dominated the Realtors in the second half, thus, towing the Talk n Text Tropang Texters to an outright passage into the quarters while relegating Sta. Lucia to the wild card phase.

The knockout wild card plays begin Sunday in the same venue with the Realtors and the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters clashing at 4 p.m. then the Burger King Whoppers and the Coca-Cola Tigers mixing it up at 6:30 p.m.

The winners advance to another do-or-die duel Wednesday to determine which team battles Purefoods in the quarterfinals.

Purefoods eliminated complication that would've forced a playoff as it fought with great resolve and notched the win that sent the team to No. 3 finish in the double-round elimination phase.

Earlier, Alaska Milk drew level with San Miguel Beer on top with identical 13-5 win-loss slates following a 95-94 nail-biter of a win over Rain or Shine.

Purefoods and Barangay Ginebra were next at 12-6, followed by Talk n Text at 11-7, Sta. Lucia at 10-8, Burger King and Coca-Cola at 6-12, Rain or Shine at 4-14 and Barako Bull at 3-15.

"Although our real target is an outright semis entry, we're happy to be at No. 3 for an automatic passage into the quarters," said Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio.

"The ultimate goal is to be on top at the end of the tournament. We'll certainly pursue it as we go into the playoffs," Gregorio added.

Sta. Lucia coach Boyet Fernandez was disappointed they missed the top five. Nonetheless, he remained confident they can make a run and get into the quarters via the backdoor.

The Giants played a solid game all night, frustrating the Realtors in their bid to get a playoff crack at an outright quarters entry.

James Yap, KG Canaleta, Roger Yap, Mark Pingris and Kerby Raymundo all scored in double figures with the rest helping the team put in together a tremendous effort on the defensive end.

"We're convinced playing good defense is the key to beat Sta. Lucia. We did just that," said Gregorio.

"We wanted Marc Pingris to stop Kelly (Williams). He did that assignment and gave us a bonus with crucial baskets," Gregorio also said.

Pingris made 11 points and was largely responsible in holding down the Sta. Lucia ace player to the same output he made.

Ryan Reyes, the other half of Sta. Lucia's dynamic Fil-Am duo, was held scoreless.

The Giants engaged the Realtors in a defensive battle, trailing by four, in the first quarter, before surging ahead, 41-35, at halftime.

They established firm control in the third quarter and went on to complete the win giving Purefoods a four-game closing romp in the elims. (SB)

SLR 108, Barako Bull 86

K-Will vs Barako

Sta. Lucia Realty and Barako Bull are nearing the end of their elimination campaigns in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup.

As things are shaping up, however, they need more games to achieve their different yet similar immediate goals.

The Realtors beat the Energy Boosters 108-86 Sunday (17 January 2010) at the Araneta Coliseum to move within another win of figuring in a multiple tie and playing off for the last automatic quarterfinals berth.

"We need to win on Friday to force at least a triple tie and a playoff," said SLR coach Boyet Fernandez after his charges notched their 10th win in 17 games.

The Realtors will wind up their campaign against Purefoods at elims end on Friday to finish at 11-7 and tie defending champion Talk ‘N Text and the Giants at 11-7.

At 11-6, Barangay Ginebra could also be relegated to the tie. But the Kings can avoid the complications if they prevail over the Burger King Whoppers later Sunday.

The defeat was the 14th in 17 games for cellar-dwelling Barako Bull and it is now left looking for a win over Coca-Cola on Wednesday to keep its flickering hopes of making it past the elims. Also, 4-13 Rain or Shine must lose to Alaska, also on Friday, to forge a playoff between the Energy Boosters and the Elasto Painters for ninth and the last wildcard seat.

"We got to keep working hard and win, that's it," said SLR forward Kelly Williams, who recorded his conference-high 14th double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds.

It's not that Barako Bull, coming off a morale-boosting 99-97 stunner over TNT last Sunday, did not give SLR some concerns, however.

"I'm happy we managed to overcome this game," said Fernandez. "Coming into this game kinakabahan ako because Barako Bull is coming off a good win and we are coming off a bad (77-85) loss to Alaska (last Wednesday)."

The loss also meant free rides to the knockout wildcard for Coca-Cola and Burger King since their five wins can only be tied by RoS but not surpassed by either the Painters nor the Boosters.

Yousif Aljamal's 20 points and 11 rebounds led Barako Bull, which also drew double-digit efforts from Leo Najorda, Alex Crisano and Ogie Menor.

The Energy Boosters actually had a 55-44 advantage off the boards but they simply had no answer to the Realtors' repeated surges that ripped wide open what started out as a close game.

Sta. Lucia simply had too many weapons.

A rejuvenated Marlou Aquino added 17 points, undrafted rookie free agent Joshua Urbiztondo finished with 14 points, six rebounds and as many assists, while Ryan Reyes and Gabby Espinas chipped in 11 apiece with the former adding six rebounds and game-highs of 10 assists and four steals.

All of those translated into a big 31-18 fourth quarter for the Realtors, who went into the final period ahead by just 77-68.

Sta. Lucia actually had a big finish in the second period, with Williams scattering 10 points in a 21-5 explosion that plucked the Realtors out of a 41-44 bind and gave them a 62-49 halftime lead.

At 37 years old and the fourth oldest in the league, Aquino was the biggest factor in the first half before finishing with conference highs in points and assists (three). He added five rebounds, which matched his most this conference.

"Marlou has been practicing well. We have had a conditioning drill the past few months and he's been dedicating himself to that," related Fernandez.

"That's why we gave him the first option in the first half, para naman masiyahan siya," he added.

Aquino gladly obliged with 13 points in the opening period with Urbiztondo and Williams joining in as SLR erected leads of 20-8 and 24-12.

Aljamal, Najorda and Menor would not let the difference balloon right there as they combined in an 11-0 spurt that gave them a 32-31 edge. (NC)

SLR vs Aces

Alaska Milk is now a heartbeat away from making the semifinals.

The Aces checked their two-game skid and closed in on an outright semis berth in the KFC PBA Philippine Cup with a gripping 85-77 victory over the Sta. Lucia Realtors at the Araneta Coliseum on 13 January 2010.

"We’ve got the monkey off our back but it’s not clear yet. We still need another one. We have to keep on going and battling. Hopefully we get a better rhythm," said Alaska coach Tim Cone.

The Aces play the Purefoods Giants Friday, the Burger King Whoppers Wednesday and Rain or Shine Elasto Painters next Friday, needing just one more win for an automatic semis entry.

With a 12-3 win-loss card, the Aces are assured of at least a playoff for the second outright semis berth.

Sta. Lucia moved out of the race for the Top Two on its seventh loss against nine wins. Barangay Ginebra, at 11-6, and Purefoods, at 10-6, are the only teams left with a chance to catch up with Alaska.

"We've got a better chance to make it. One big thing going for us is that we have control of our destiny," said Cone.

The Aces made it 2-0 versus the Realtors this conference in playing steadily throughout and drawing huge breaks at endgame.

They pounced on crucial errors by the Realtors as they broke loose from a tight game at the finish.

"It was a close game that boiled down to a battle in the trenches. It showed the desire of both teams," said Cone.

"Joseph Yeo was fantastic for the second straight game. Good for us, Jeff (Cariaso) came out and provided us a real veteran presence, getting huge rebounds and huge points," Cone also said.

Cariaso finished in double figures for the first time this season, knocking down 13 points, including nine in the payoff period.

Cariaso's final basket touched off a decisive eight-to-nothing run giving Alaska a 79-72 lead with 2:15 left to play.

The Realtors managed to come to within two at 77-79 but wasted their effort on a dribbling error by Ryan Reyes and an offensive infraction by Joseph Yeo.

Sta. Lucia earlier had crucial defensive breakdowns allowing Alaska to get the 79-72 spread.

Joe Devance, LA Tenorio, Reynel Hugnatan and Sonny Thoss were the other Aces who scored in double figures.

Reyes, Yeo, Kelly Williams and Nelbert Omolon, meanwhile, carried the cudgels for the Realtors. (SB)

Yeo vs BK

One automatic semis slot has been taken away and another could be gone in the next few days.

The battle for the next three positions, however, is only about to get tougher.

Sta. Lucia Realty made it two-zero in three days and tightened up the race for the three outright quarterfinals slots in the KFC PBA Philippine Cup after a gripping 83-79 win over Burger King at the Cuneta Astrodome on 8 January 2010.

Kelly Williams grabbed the rebounds and Joseph Yeo put in the points as the Realtors overcame the fierce-fighting Whoppers, thus, catching up with the Purefoods Giants at fifth place on their identical 9-6 win-loss cards.

SLR and Purefoods are in strong contention for an outright quarters seat with Barangay Ginebra and Talk n Text just a game ahead at 10-6.

Alaska Milk, with an 11-2 card, may clinch the second outright semis berth.

"We know we're still in the fight for the Top Five and we want to grab the opportunity. We'll be there fighting," said Sta. Lucia coach Boyet Fernandez.

Yeo put in a personal season-best 31 points while Williams had a double-double job with 17 rebounds and 15 points as the Realtors got a follow-up on their 95-91 win over the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters Wednesday.

Josh Urbiztondo and Gabby Espinas provided help as the Realtors survived a tough battle with ace guard Ryan Reyes sitting out the final half with a sore back.

Alex Cabagnot and Wesley Gonzales had decent showings in their first game in a BK jersey but their efforts went to naught as the Whoppers reeled to an 11th loss in 16 games.

Cabagnot made 17 points, nine rebounds, two assists and one steal while Gonzales added 13 points and six rebounds.

Yeo poured in the bulk of his output in the second half leading the Realtors to the crucial win in the game marred by the ejection of BK coach Yeng Guiao on technical fouls.

It was a tight game that saw neither team lead by more than six points.

The Realtors had fallen by five at 63-68 when Yeo returned to the floor and resumed his torrid shooting, pushing SLR back on top at 78-72.

Yeo went seven-of-seven from the stripe and 11-of-19 from the field in his second most productive game as a pro.

Williams was 1-of-10 from the lane but made up for it with his domination of the boards. (SB)

K-Will vs RoS

The Sta. Lucia Realtors desperately needed a win against Rain or Shine on 6 January 2010.

Things didn't look good, though, in the closing minutes and the Realtors' shot for a trouble-free entry into the quarterfinals of the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup appeared in jeopardy.

But with the game on the line, Kelly Williams took matters into his hands, scoring six straight dagger points inside 60 seconds as the Realtors held off the Elasto Painters, 95-91, at the Araneta Coliseum.

The 2007-08 MVP’s two free throws with 1:59 remaining tied the count at 89 then hit a tough turnaround shot to put the Realtors ahead to stay. The slam-dunking forward knocked in another jumper before Ryan Reyes made two free throws to complete an 8-0 wind-up that took the fight away from the Elasto Painters.

"Kelly was really terrific tonight. He stepped up in the closing seconds and made two crucial shots. That’s why he is the leader of this team," said Sta. Lucia coach Boyet Fernandez during the post-game interview.

Williams, who leads everyone in the conference in the rebounding department, turned in 25 points and had a career-high-tying 19 boards for his 11th double-double – the most by any player in the conference.

He was practically unstoppable in the fourth quarter accounting for 15 of his team’s 24 markers in the period.

"Kelly wasn't the only one who did well tonight. Ryan (Reyes) also did a good job working the backcourt and Jason (Misolas) hit some crucial shots when Rain or Shine threatened to make a run," Fernandez said.

The Realtors improved to 8-6 (win-loss) record, just a game behind Barangay Ginebra and Purefoods (9-6), to stay in contention for one of three outright quarterfinal berths.

"Before the game I told the players we need to win all our five remaining games if we want an easy way into the quarters. I’m glad they responded well," Fernandez said.

The Realtors will go for W No. 9 on Friday against struggling Burger King.

"I expect a tough match against Burger King. But we’ll be ready on Friday," Fernandez said.

Joseph Yeo scored 12 points, seldom-used Misolas had 10 and Reyes dished off six assists for the Realtors, who bounced back from a 112-117 loss against Talk N’ Text last Dec. 23.

Starting the new year on a high note, Sta. Lucia posted the games biggest margin at 28-18 late in the first quarter although the game was close the rest of the way, the count being tied seven times.

Rain or Shine, which dropped to a 4-11 slate, appeared to have seized the momentum when Jeff Chan knocked in a three that put the Elasto Painters ahead, 89-87, with 2:12 remaining.

But they went scoreless in the next 1:30 minutes, spoiling their efforts.

Gave Norwood scored 18 points and Chan added 17 for the Elasto Painters, who missed 14 of 31 free throws and 8 of 17 in the fourth.

Sta. Lucia outrebounded ROS, 62-42 and enjoyed a 15-6 edge off the offensive boards in the second half that netted them 14 points. (DBC)

Mark Cardona came through with his third 30-point job in their last four games with six other Talk n Text Tropang Texters also finishing in double figures as they overcame the Sta. Lucia Realtors, 117-112, in a high-scoring duel to stay right behind the top two placers in the KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Astrodome on 23 December 2009.

Cardona scattered 34 points and drew significant help from Ali Peek, Harvey Carey, Jimmy Alapag, Jason Castro, Jarred Dillinger and Ranidel de Ocampo as they kept their domination of the Realtors in their head-to-head battles and firmed up their hold of third place behind the San Miguel Beermen (12-3) and the Alaska Milk Aces (11-2) with a 10-5 win-loss record.

Cardona knocked in two treys and went 10-of-16 from the two-point zone and 8-of-12 from the stripe in his fifth 30-point game in the all-Filipino tourney.

"I was worried coming into this game since Jimmy Alapag and Jarred Dillinger are not 100 percent healthy. I was also wary of Sta. Lucia which has been playing as well as any other team in the league right now. I was glad we got in sync at the finish and came through," said Talk n Text coach Chot Reyes.

"Other guys like Pong Escobal and Jason Castro held the fort for our team early on, allowing Jimmy and Jarred to finish strong," Reyes also said as they made it two in a row over the Realtors this conference.

Ryan Reyes fired a career-best 32 points but the Realtors faltered at the finish, thus, moving down to sixth place with a 7-6 card.

Kelly Williams and Joseph Yeo combined for 34 points but both threw bricks in the crunch. Williams finished with a woeful 4-of-18 field-goal shooting and Yeo with a 3-of-14 clip.

The Realtors seemed to have seized control at 102-98 before running into a maze of errors and misses.

Cardona and Alapag knocked in four points each in an eight-to-nothing Talk n Text blitz sending the Texters ahead to stay at 106-102.

Actually, Reyes and Joseph Urbiztondo still kept the Realtors into the fight until Alapag rifled in a back-breaking three-pointer giving the Texters a 113-107 advantage with less than a minute left to play.

Alapag had another sterling off-the-bench job, firing nine of his 14 points in the payoff period. He also got away with two assists and one rebound in 16 minutes of play.

"For Jimmy, it's about heart," said Reyes of his prized guard, bucking a hamstring injury.

Cardona and Reyes engaged in a shootout early, highlighting the fierce game marked by 13 deadlocks and 18 lead changes.

"We just couldn't stop them early on. Good thing, we held our own in the high-scoring game," said Reyes. (SB)

Jason Urbiztondo came into the game with the mindset of giving Johnny Abarrientos the highest respect - just off the court though and not inside of it. It paid off.

The Fil-Am rookie guard played inspired game ranged against the eminent Abarrientos, piling up a game-high 22 points as Sta. Lucia Realty repeated over Barangay Ginebra, 93-88, to close in on the leaders in the KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum Wednesday night (16 December 2009).

"He's heard a lot about Johnny even back in the United States. He knows Johnny is a great point guard and he's honored to play him. For him not to be awed, we talked to him before the game. We challenged him in his match-up with Johnny," said Sta. Lucia coach Boyet Fernandez.

"We prepared his frame of mind. Basta sabi namin give the utmost respect to Johnny outside the court. Pero sa loob ng court, wala na munang respeto. Just play hard," Fernandez added.

Urbiztondo responded well to the challenge, leading all scorers with 22, including 10 in the payoff period. He knocked in four triples in the game and canned in four charities in the last 24 seconds, helping the Realtors seal their repeat win over the Kings. Sta. Lucia clobbered Ginebra, 93-72, in their previous tiff.

Kelly Williams hauled down a career-high 19 rebounds and added 13 points while Nelbert Omolon had his own double-double game with 14 points and 10 rebounds as the Realtors notched a second straight win following a 98-92 drubbing of the Coca-Cola Tigers Friday.

With a 7-5 win-loss card, the Realtors are now only half-game behind the Kings, the Talk n Text Tropang Texters and the Purefoods Giants who are tied at 8-5.

"It was a big win that got us close to the leaders. We intend to continue to work hard and see what happens," said Fernandez.

Sta. Lucia and Ginebra figured in a fierce match with the Realtors pulling through in the end on a 9-3 closing run. The Realtors were down by one, 84-85, when Omolon, Joseph Yeo and Urbiztondo combined for seven unanswered points pushing SLR ahead to stay at 91-85.

Marlou Aquino had his contribution on key defensive stops on Eric Menk at the finish. Sta. Lucia made the key defensive adjustment, putting Aquino on Menk after the Ginebra slotman had bulldozed his way to 16 points against Gabby Espinas and Jason Misolas.

Menk fired 12 points in the final quarter with the last capping a charge that pushed Ginebra ahead at 85-84. (SB)

Rookie guard Josh Urbiztondo overshadowed superstar teammates Kelly Williams and Ryan Reyes with his energy and effort to help Sta. Lucia Realty repeat over Coca-Cola, 98-92, last 11 December 2009 in the 2009-10 KFC-PBA Philippine Cup at the Ynares Center, Antipolo.

The 26-year-old, who had no takers during the annual rookie Draft last October, tallied a second career-best 22 points and made 6-of-10 3-point attempts in a sterling performance that justified coach Boyet Fernadez’s decision to sign him up.

His successive 3s late in the second quarter broke a 41-all tie and shoved the Realtors ahead to stay.

"It’s nice to win again. We’ve been really struggling the past couple of games but tonight the players really worked hard to get the W," Fernandez said.

As they often do, the Realtors ran their plays around Williams, Joseph Yeo and Bitoy Omolon.

But when push came to shove, Urbiztondo made the big plays and made the difference as the Realtors snapped a two-game skid and improved to a 6-5 (win-loss) record.

"His energy and effort was awesome. When we signed him up, we knew he’ll be playing a huge role for the team. I’m glad he stepped up bigtime tonight," said Fernandez, of his rookie guard who made the roster when veteran playmaker Denok Miranda was traded to San Miguel.

Williams led the Realtors with 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting and grabbed 17 rebounds for his conference-leading eighth double-double in the conference. He also had six assists and two blocks.

Yeo scored 14 points and Dennis Daa turned in 11 in place of starting center Gabby Espinas, who is out with sprained left ankle. Reyes, who was hurting in his groin, managed just three points on 1-of-6 shooting in 25 minutes of play.

A free throw and a layup off a spin move by Mark Macapagal pulled the Tigers within 48-49 at the start of the third. But Urbiztondo knocked his fourth and fifth treys of the night to cap a 14-5 run by the Realtors and Sta. Lucia stretched the lead to 63-53 late in the quarter.

"Right now we're still a work in progress. So if by chance we make it outright to the semis it will be just a bonus for us. But I guess making the quarterfinals is more manageable goal for the team," said Fernandez, whose SLR team defeated the Tigers 95-76 last October 16.

Both teams were so-so from the field and shot poorly from the free throw line. Sta. Lucia made just 40-of-89 attempts (44 percent) while Coca-Cola went 34-of-82 (41 percent). The Realtors went 8-of-20 from the free throw line while the Tigers were even worse with 19-for-34.

Alex Cabagnot scored 15 points and had five assists for Coca-Cola while RJ Rizada had a career-high 13 which Magapagal matched. Dennis Espino added 12 and 11 boards for the Tigers who dropped their eight consecutive loss and 11th in 12 games.

The losing streak matched the conference’s longest futility and tied the franchise’s worst effort when it went 1-8 at the start of 2006-07 Philippine Cup.

Asi Taulava, who was sidelined for six weeks with a right ankle injury, returned to action but was visibly out of game shape. He grabbed 10 rebounds but scored just 8 points on a 1-of-8 shooting and went 6-of-12 from the line. (DBC)

Dondon Hontiveros and Mike Cortez riddled Sta. Lucia with three-point shots in the third quarter and the San Miguel Beermen stretched the league’s longest win streak to nine with a 110-94 blowout against the Sta. Lucia Realtors last 4 December 2009 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Hontiveros made 9-of-13 field goal attempts for 21 points and Cortez added 14 as SMB (9-2) stayed close behind league-leader Alaska (9-1) and brighten up its chances for an outright semifinal spot in the 2009-10 KFC-PBA Philippine Cup.

"I honestly feel that anybody is capable of beating us on any given night. We’re just in a good streak right now," said SMB head coach Siot Tanquingcen afterwards.

He said his only worry right now is the possibility of his players losing their focus. "It's human nature. When things are doing well sometimes you tend to be complacent," he said.

In a remarkable display of shotmaking from the 3-point zone, Hontiveros made all his three attempts while Cortez went 3-for-5. As a team, SMB shot 12-of-27 from the trifecta zone. The 9-game win streak was the longest for the SMC franchise since it swept its 10 games in the 1989 Open Conference eliminations.

The Realtors were just down by a point early in the third but their shooting woes once again got in the way and Sta.Lucia picked up its second straight defeat to fall to 5-5. Arwind Santos scored 10 points and had as many rebounds for the Beermen, who shot 52 percent from the field to offset their 19 turnovers.

After Kelly Williams scored on a layup that made the count 48-49, Sta. Lucia went scoreless in the next four minutes while SMB unloaded 12 points of their own to stretch the margin to 61-48. Ryan Reyes made two free throws to snap the drought then knocked in a 3-pointer that made the count 53-61. But Hontiveros quickly responded with two straight 3s and Cortez added two of his own as the Beermen all but sealed the game, 73-53.

Nelbert Omolon scored 20 points, Reyes turned in 17 and Kelly Williams added 15 for Sta.Lucia which shot just 39 percent from the field. (DBC)

Purefoods outperformed Sta. Lucia in the conference’s lowest-scoring game here Saturday, and the Giants finished above .500 at the close of the initial round of the KFC PBA Philippine Cup double-round elimination phase.

In a battle between the Finals protagonists two seasons ago, the Giants subdued the Realtors, 68-63, in their out-of-town showdown at the Robert Barbers Memorial Sports Complex and caught up with their victims at fifth place halfway through the elims of the all-Filipino tourney.

It was the lowest-scoring game in the league since Barangay Ginebra defeated Rain or Shine 63-58 on Christmas Day in this very same conference last season.

Purefoods and Sta. Lucia will sport identical 5-4 win-loss cards at the start of the second round Sunday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City with pacesetting Alaska Milk (8-1) going up against Barako Bull (2-7) and second-running San Miguel Beer (7-2) taking on Burger King (3-6).

The Aces zapped the Energy Boosters, 99-83, while the Beermen whipped Whoppers, 117-99, in their first-round meetings.

Burger King starts the second round at 3-6 while Barako Bull is tied with Rain or Shine at 2-7 with Coca-Cola in the bottom of the heap at 1-8.

The last placer after the two rounds misses the playoff phase in this all-Filipino tourney topped by Talk ‘N Text last year.

Purefoods tied Sta. Lucia in the middle of the standings halfway through the elims as the Giants sustained their alternating wins and losses ride in the tourney, emerging triumphant in the Surigao del Norte stop of the Phoenix Fuel PBA on Tour by holding the Realtors to an all-time franchise low in field-goal percentage and the fourth all-time lowest overall in league history.

Sta. Lucia shot only 24.6%, making just 16 of their 65 attempts from the field en route to the lowest output by any team this conference so far.

"We really put value on defense," said Purefoods head coach Ryan Gregorio.

For his part, Sta. Lucia counterpart Boyet Fernandez rued their "bad shooting night."

"We had poor shot selection, bad execution and played lousy. We came back in the fourth but it was already too late," Fernandez explained.

Kerby Raymundo led the Giants with 15 points with Paul Artadi and Roger Yap adding 10 apiece. James Yap shared only seven points while playing with a sore knee.

Raymundo and James Yap scored the first two baskets of the game and the Giants held on to the lead to the finish.

The Giants took the first quarter at 18-13, sat on a 33-26 cushion at halftime and roared to their biggest spread at 46-31 before completing the wire-to-wire win.

The Realtors, who defeated Purefoods in seven games in the Finals two seasons ago to win their first and only Philippine Cup title, came out flat from a six-day respite and suffered a first loss in their last three games.

Sta. Lucia ace guard Ryan Reyes struggled for only six points while key off-season acquisition Gabby Espinas went scoreless for the first time in an SLR jersey.

Kelly Williams paced the Realtors with 16 and a game-high 16 rebounds. (SB)

SLR 80, Barako Bull 77

Joseph Yeo

Sta. Lucia Realty couldn't buy a basket, much less a triple against Barako Bull Sunday (22 November 2009) and Realtors coach Boyet Fernandez claims it was all because his team was not mentally prepared.

Good thing Joseph Yeo would not allow that concern to be translated into a loss.

Yeo struck for the Realtors' first six points in the extension and had a hand on another basket to give them the necessary push towards an 80-77 overtime win over the upset-conscious Energy Boosters in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

Yeo taking over when his teammates continued to struggle pointed Sta. Lucia to its second straight victory and at least a share of fourth-running spot on a 5-3 win-loss record.

Despite the win, however, Fernandez remained dissatisfied with the way his boys followed up on their 93-72 rout of Barangay Ginebra last Wednesday.

“My players really played bad,” said Fernandez. “No matter if we repeatedly told them Barako Bull is a very dangerous team, they still thought they already had a won game. You could see it in the dugout and during the game. I hope this serves as a lesson.”

Yeo finished with a game-high 16 points while Gabby Espinas, Kelly Williams and Ryan Reyes each had at least 11 points. Espinas and Williams added 10 rebounds each in the game that is the lowest scoring overtime match since San Miguel Beer defeated the Realtors via the same score in the 2003 All-Filipino Cup eliminations.

“It's a good thing Joseph stepped up and Ryan came back and displayed leadership in the fourth period and endgame despite his foul troubles,” said Fernandez. “But as a team we really played bad.”

Nelbert Omolon, whose charities pegged a 66-all count in the last 73 seconds of regulation, connected on a layup off Yeo's third assist of the game that put Sta. Lucia ahead 78-73. After Gilbert Lao drained a triple, Omolon iced it with two charities that made it a four-point game, only 8.6 ticks left.

“We have to be consistent,” said Fernandez, whose team next faces Purefoods on Saturday. “It seems we're two different teams. Every time na strong team ang kaharap, maganda ang focus. Pero pagdating sa ang kalaban pareho lang ang kalidad namin sa tingin nila, sumasama ang laro. We have to address that in the next few days.”

Yousif Aljamal's charity pegged the final score with a charity to finish with a team-high 14 points for Barako Bull, which absorbed its fifth straight loss and dropped to a 2-7 slate.

Not after giving Sta. Lucia a big scare in the form of several 10-point leads, the last at 63-53 off Ogie Menor's trey, 10:07 left in regulation.

The Energy Boosters could have won it outright with two thrusts in the dying seconds of the fourth period, but Menor missed a triple and Aris Dimaunahan's reverse try got blocked by Espinas just before the buzzer.

Sta. Lucia managed to come out on top despite missing 16 free throws and making just two out of 16 three-point attempts. The Realtors also made just 25 of 67 field goal attempts.

It was the worst three-point shooting by a winning team since Barangay Ginebra also made only two triples in a 98-86 victory over San Miguel Beer in their conference debut last month.

Barako Bull was just slightly better off. It made half of its 28 free throw tries, shot 28 of 76 from the field and made seven of 20 triple tries.

All those got translated into the Energy Boosters seizing control from the first five minutes of the second period and on to the third canto, where they broke off from a 37-all tie to erect a 48-38 lead on a Richard Alonzo jumper.

Alonzo wound wind up with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds before fouling out off Espinas, 3:19 left in regulation. Espinas' resulting charities made it a 64-66 count. (NC)

K-Will vs Wilson

Not taking anything away from Sta. Lucia but fatigue factor seemed to come to play in this game.

The well-rested Realtors proved too much for the battle-weary Barangay Ginebra side, pulling off an emphatic 93-72 win in the KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum last 18 November 2009.

Kelly Williams and the rest of the Sta. Lucia team pounded and pummeled Ginebra in the last three quarters, checking a two-game skid and snapping the Kings' three-game winning streak.

The Realtors had lost three of their last four games but came out with a lot of energy and intensity playing their first official game since a 69-88 defeat at the hands San Miguel Beer in Victorias, Negros Occidental last 7 November. They fashioned out a come-from-behind 96-95 decision over Smart Gilas in their non-bearing match a week ago at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

The Kings, meanwhile, seemed to play with no spring in their legs, coming from their 83-79 win over the Burger King Whoppers Saturday in Tubod, Lanao del Norte.

Before going up against Sta. Lucia, Ginebra had won its last three games for a 5-1 card – the team’s best start in any tourney since winning six of its first seven games in the 1998 Governors Cup.

But the Kings didn't get a chance against the Realtors.

The Realtors raced to a 20-point lead at halftime and refused to slow down as they notched a fourth win against three losses.

Williams, inspired by a new-born son, churned out a near triple-double job with 26 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists with Ryan Reyes and Jason Misolas also stepping up as Sta. Lucia frustrated Ginebra in a bid to tie Alaska Milk atop the leader board.

The Kings instead slid to third behind the Aces and the San Miguel Beermen at 5-2.

"Kelly did a good job. He’s really inspired being a brand new father," said Sta. Lucia coach Boyet Fernandez of Williams whose wife gave birth to a first child Tuesday (17 November).

"Ryan and Jason are also worth mentioning but it’s actually a team effort. We prepared well for this game and we reaped good dividend," Fernandez added.

Williams and his teammates torched the Kings with a 47.6-percent shooting in the second quarter to open a 50-30 margin spread at the half.

Williams had 10 points on top of six rebounds and six assists with Joshua Urbiztondo adding six points and three rebounds and Gabby Espinas chipping in five points and four rebounds as the Realtors got away with a big second-quarter onslaught, beating the Kings by 16 points in the period.

After fighting the Realtors through two deadlock and three lead changes in the opening period, the Kings tapered off the second quarter, scoring only nine on a miserable 16.7-percent clip.

The Realtors simply kept their domination of the Kings in the final half.

SMB vs SLR

San Miguel Beer came away with its awesome offensive last night as it routed a struggling Sta. Lucia Realty team, 88-69, to for its fourth straight win after a 0-2 start in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup at the Victorias City Sports and Amusement Center on 5 November 2009.

The Beermen, who led by as much as 28 in the game, spent the first quarter sizing up the Realtors and soon caught fire that eventually enabled them to end a 5-game losing streak in out-of-town games dating back to last season and their first in two Phoenix Petroleum-backed road games.

The Realtors were in the game only in the third quarter where their shooting improved a little, going eight-of-18 from the field, but just the same, they never got close to overhauling their huge deficit en route to their third loss against three wins.

Arwind Santos was unstoppable all gamelong as he poured in 21 points while four others – Dorian Pena, Dondon Hontiveros, Lordy Tugade and Denok Miranda -- also scored in twin-digits as the Beermen wrapped up the victory which was evident as early as in the second quarter when they opened up a 36-21 spread on a four-point cluster each by former SLR stalwart Denok Miranda, Mike Cortez and Dorian Pena.

It was an all-SMB show from there.

The Beermen, who lost to Alaska Milk, 74-85 in a similar out-of-town game in Panabo City last October 7, complemented their trapping defense with fast breaks to dominate the early goings, although a triple by Ryan Reyes and a follow-up by Kelly Williams kept the Realtors within striking distance at 15-16.

But San Miguel, which moved to a tie for third with Talk 'N Text (2-1) behind Alaska (6-0) and Barangay Ginebra (2-1), outscored the Realtors anew, with Pena, Miranda, Tugade and Santos putting a basket each in an 8-2 tear which gave SMB a 24-17 lead after the first quarter.

The Realtors, who were held to the lowest output by any team this conference, not only had a deteriorating defense in the second quarter. Their offense was anemic as well that not even a slam dunk by Kelly Williams which drew loud cheers from the crowd was not enough to spark the Realtors. Instead, their agony continued as they turned the ball a number of times and produced only 11 points the whole second quarter on a horrendous 4-of-17 from the field.

In utterly sharp contrast, the Beermen seemed frolicking on both ends, coming away with huge 24-point production behind the guns of Miranda, Santos, Mike Cortez and Pena. By the end of the first half, the Beermen were safely ahead at 48-28.

Miller versus SLR

Alaska Milk has done a game better from last year, matching a record start the franchise made over a decade ago.

The Aces stayed sharp and steady despite a nine-day rest, getting their best conference start in 11 years as they whipped the Sta. Lucia Realtors, 91-83, in the KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum on 4 November 2009.

Joe Devance came through with a double-double game with 15 points and 11 rebounds while Willie Miller had 19 points, five assists and four rebounds as the Aces preserved their clean slate in five games in the all-Filipino tourney.

It's the franchise's best start in a tourney since also opening up with a 5-0 win-loss roll in the 1998 All-Filipino Conference. Back then, the Aces lost their sixth game.

"Doing a game better will certainly be our motivation in our next game," said Alaska coach Tim Cone, vowing they will work hard to beat Burger King Friday at the Cuneta Astrodome.

"The theme tonight was to do one game better from last year. We're 4-0 last year then we lost our next game," Cone also said.

"We'd got it but it's certainly not easy. Sta. Lucia has always been a tough match-up for us. We just couldn't shake them. We pulled through with big plays on both ends down the stretch," Cone added.

Kelly Williams and Gabby Espinas both got double-double efforts that went down the drain as the Realtors suffered a second loss against three wins.

Sta. Lucia, thus, slid to joint second with San Miguel.

Williams got away with game highs of 20 points and 14 rebounds while Espinas came through with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Ryan Reyes also had a solid all-round game helping Sta. Lucia put up a whale of a fight in the contest.

The Aces, however, won't be denied as they hung tough to the finish.

Devance made key plays on both ends in the closing minutes to clinch the win for the Aces.

The Realtors trailed by eight, 38-46, at the half while converting only 27.8 percent of their shots.

The Aces banked on a better shooting as they dominated the first two quarters though beaten in the battle off the boards, 23-29, and committing more turnovers, 17-13.

The Realtors got into the thick of things on a searing rally in the second half.

Josh Urbiztondo

Joshua Urbiztondo, an undrafted Fil-Am rookie, introduced himself to the local pro league last 30 October 2009.

Given extended minutes with Ryan Reyes slowed down by an injury, Urbiztondo grabbed the opportunity for a breakout game, erupting for 24 points to lead Sta. Lucia to a 101-93 win over Burger King in the pre-Haloween presentation of the KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

"I just tried to bring out the energy of the team and I think I was able to do that while also having some point production," said the 26-year-old Fil-Am tracing his roots in Bulacan.

"Much credit belonged to the guy. He stepped up while Ryan Reyes played limited minutes due to an ankle sprain," said Sta. Lucia coach Boyet Fernandez.

Urbiztondo, who scored a total of only eight points in his first three games in the PBA, amassed 24 against the Whoppers, going 2-of-5 from the three-point area, 7-of-11 from the two-point zone and 4-of-5 from the stripe.

The gutsy guard also produced four rebounds, four assists and two steals against one error in 34 minutes of action.

"With Ryan injured, we changed our rotation, getting Joshua to play the point and sliding Ryan at No. 2. It worked well and I think it deserves a second look. We'll analyze things baka pwedeng ulitin ng ulitin," said Fernandez.

Reyes, Dennis Daa, Kelly Williams and Nelbert Omolon got their usual numbers, and the Realtors had a relatively easy time repulsing the Whoppers to gain solo second place in the tourney with a 3-1 win-loss marks.

BK played catch-up basketball practically all night as it suffered a third loss against a lone win.

Reyes came through with 15 points, six assists, five rebounds and three steals in playing half-healthy.

Daa had 15 points and four rebounds, Williams had 14 points and the same number of rebounds while Omolon had 10 points.

Urbiztondo amassed 15 just in the opening half.

He formed a deadly backcourt partnership with Reyes with the two combining for 37 points as the Realtors took the turn at 54-40.

The Realtors established control early, closing the opening period at 25-15.

Sta. Lucia worked hard from the opening tip, forcing Burger King to 17 turnovers just in the first 24 minutes of play. The Realtors produced 20 huge points on those BK errors.

The Realtors were also a lot steadier in field-goal shooting, hitting at a 58.5-percent clip as against the Whoppers' 38.5-percent marksmanship.

Daa was a third Realtor hitting double-digit mark right at the half, making 11 on 4-of-4 field-goal shooting and 3-of-4 free throws.

SMART-GILAS Games Have No Bearing

On: 30 October 2009

SMART-GILAS

Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) commissioner Sonny Barrios informed the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Thursday that the league has decided to render no-bearing all games of the Smart-Gilas national team, which is participating in the ongoing 2009-10 KFC PBA Philippine Cup as a guest team.

In his letter to Noli Eala, SBP executive director, Barrios said the decision will better serve the purpose of Smart Gilas in its bid to make the 2012 London Olympics.

"We are convinced that it is in everyone’s best interest if both teams go into the game with the same mindset that the game has no bearing. Both Smart Gilas and the PBA opposing team, and their players, will thus be on equal footing as far as their outlook and approach of the game are concerned," Barrios said.

That means the results of the games played by Burger King, Talk N’ Text and Barangay Ginebra against Smart Gilas prior to the passing of the new directive are considered nullified and will not reflect in their win-loss record.

Apparently, the decision to bench CJ Giles for most part of the game between Smart Gilas and Talk N’ Text last October 21, 2009 prompted the PBA Board of Governors to revisit the guidelines set for Smart-Gilas’ participation. Talk N’ Text won that game by a blowout, 103-70.

Barrios said the Board directed him to choose only between two options: 1) for Smart Gilas games to have no bearing even on PBA teams, and 2) for Smart Gilas not to play CJ Giles in any of its remaining games that will have a bearing on the PBA teams.

Since the main objective of Smart Gilas’ participation as a guest team is to help the Nationals prepare for upcoming international tournaments, Barrios leaned toward rendering the games of Smart Gilas no bearing instead of barring Giles from playing.

"We recognize that CJ Giles is a very vital part of the national team, the reason why he is considered as a candidate for naturalization as a Filipino citizen.

"He is seen as the ‘good big man’ the country sorely lacks to be able to compete with the powerhouse teams in Asia today. It will not help the team’s cause any if Giles is not allowed to play with the team," Barrios explained.

The present situation where the results count only for PBA teams has, apparently, also become a cause for concern for PBA coach and players alike.

"Some players have pointed out that the different treatment almost always means a difference in the level of intensity that may give rise to physical play and unwanted incidents," Barrios said.

Barrios also took into account the observation of Barangay Guinebra coach Jong Uichico, himself a former national mentor.

Following Ginebra’s 100-72 win against Smart Gilas, Uichico was quoted in the papers as saying: "It is unfortunate that the PBA teams play the National Team always looking to win."

The coach of the National Team to the 2002 Busan Games added that “the best way to help the RP team is to take away the ‘we have to win’ attitude and give the PBA teams the opportunity to simulate the patterns of the teams the Nationals will be facing in the international arena.”

Barrios dispelled concerns by the SBP that the PBA teams would not take the games seriously now that they have no bearing.

"Just like you assured us that Smart-Gilas will be prepared to play every game competitively and passionately, we also guarantee that our PBA teams will give the Nationals the competition they need to toughen up for the bigger hardcourt wars ahead."

SLR vs TnT

Talk n Text, the title holder toughened up by a heavy load of overseas training during the off-season, continued to throw its weight around in the 2009-2010 KFC Philippine Cup, ripping Sta. Lucia Realty, 100-83, at the Araneta Coliseum Sunday night (25 October 2009).

The Tropang Texters, working on a sleek running game, broke away in the third period and never looked back en route to a third straight win following earlier victories over Smart Gilas and Rain or Shine.

So impressive were the Texters in their first three games, winning all these matches by an average margin of 19.7 points.

Ranged against the 2007-08 Philippine Cup champions, the reigning title-holders were still up to the task notwithstanding the absence of sophomore guard-forward Jarred Dillinger.

"We rose on Jarred's absence by playing tough defense. We suffered on Sta. Lucia's awesome rebounding early on but we came out strong in the second half, making great, energetic plays," said Talk n Text coach Chot Reyes.

"It's a nice win for us but I guess the real proof of our defensive pudding is our next game," added Reyes, referring to their showdown with San Miguel Beer Wednesday.

Dillinger sat out the game due to a sprained ankle but the Tropang Texters hardly felt his absence with the team continuing to play A-1 game together.

Mark Cardona poured in a game-high 25 points with Jason Castro, Jimmy Alapag, Nic Belasco and Ali Peek adding at least 11 points each.

Cardona and Belasco fired nine and eight, respectively, in the third period, fueling TnT's breakaway from a mere six-point lead at halftime.

Establishing control in the third, the Texters kept the pace all the way to the finish to preserve their clean slate while dealing the Realtors their first loss in three starts.

Going down the drain were the big numbers of Joseph Yeo, Nelbert Omolon, Gabby Espinas, Ryan Reyes and Kelly Williams.

K-Will

Sta. Lucia Realty is on a mission and will pounce on any opportunity that comes its way.

Like Wednesday (21 October 2009), when the Realtors took advantage of Rain or Shine’s manpower shortage to carve out a 95-90 overtime victory and grab a share of the early lead in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome.

Kelly Williams flashed his MVP form of two seasons ago with 28 points, 14 rebounds and six assists while Joseph Yeo and Bitoy Omolon provided plenty of help in the Realtors’ decisive surge in the extension as Sta. Lucia started a conference at 2-0 for the first time in three conferences, or since the 2008 Fiesta.

The Elasto Painters sorely missed the services of Sol Mercado, who was struck by food poisoning the night before, and the injured Mike Hrabak as they absorbed their second loss in as many games.

"I’m happy we came out winners," said Realtors coach Boyet Fernandez, whose team opened its bid to get back the crown it won in the 2007-08 season with a 95-76 thrashing of Coca-Cola last Friday.

"Our players started flat because they probably thought without Mercado and Hrabak we can win the game handily," he added. "But credit Rain or Shine. They played their game tonight, even without those two, especially Mercado."

Rain or Shine did dish out a valiant fight, but fell way short in overtime where it was held to a solitary field goal. It was the Asian Coatings franchise’s second loss, dropping it in the company of San Miguel Beer, Coca-Cola and Smart Gilas.

For naught went the 19 points by Ryan Arana and the 18 and team-high nine rebounds by Gabe Norwood, whose fallaway in the last three seconds of regulation pegged an 84-all count. Last year’s Rookie of the Year also had a game-high seven turnovers.

"Loss is on my shoulders tho. 7 TOs wont help any team win a close," Norwood said on his Twitter page.

The touch that propped Rain or Shine back from a 48-59 deficit and enabled it to engage Sta. Lucia through four deadlocks and eight lead changes in the fourth quarter alone was virtually absent in overtime as the Elasto Painters went 1-for-9 from the field.

The Realtors were quick to capitalize, surging to a 92-86 spread that proved solid enough to hold up in the last 1:34.

SLRs 2009 PBA Phil. Cup Elims Schedule

Ryan Reyes and Joseph Yeo

Sta. Lucia Realtors (SLR) will have a good pacing of games in the early part of the elimination round, but the story for the team in the Philippine Basketball Association 2009 Philippine Cup is the same as it was in 2007. After winning their first ever All-Filipino title that year, there was one thing that became certain — the Realtor's fortunes ride entirely on the health of Kelly Williams and Ryan Reyes.

For many SLR 'Believers', this isn't anything new. Nor is it particularly revelatory, especially when you consider that the team lack potential superstar aside from the two. Joseph Yeo could be one in the making, but he still do not have the effect that Williams and Reyes bring to the team again and again. Hopefully, the loose schedule below can help the two superstars nurse their various injuries and other not typical basketball-styled maladies.
