SLR vs SMB

Dondon Hontiveros and Mike Cortez riddled Sta. Lucia with three-point shots in the third quarter and the San Miguel Beermen stretched the league’s longest win streak to nine with a 110-94 blowout against the Sta. Lucia Realtors last 4 December 2009 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Hontiveros made 9-of-13 field goal attempts for 21 points and Cortez added 14 as SMB (9-2) stayed close behind league-leader Alaska (9-1) and brighten up its chances for an outright semifinal spot in the 2009-10 KFC-PBA Philippine Cup.

"I honestly feel that anybody is capable of beating us on any given night. We’re just in a good streak right now," said SMB head coach Siot Tanquingcen afterwards.

He said his only worry right now is the possibility of his players losing their focus. "It's human nature. When things are doing well sometimes you tend to be complacent," he said.

In a remarkable display of shotmaking from the 3-point zone, Hontiveros made all his three attempts while Cortez went 3-for-5. As a team, SMB shot 12-of-27 from the trifecta zone. The 9-game win streak was the longest for the SMC franchise since it swept its 10 games in the 1989 Open Conference eliminations.

The Realtors were just down by a point early in the third but their shooting woes once again got in the way and Sta.Lucia picked up its second straight defeat to fall to 5-5. Arwind Santos scored 10 points and had as many rebounds for the Beermen, who shot 52 percent from the field to offset their 19 turnovers.

After Kelly Williams scored on a layup that made the count 48-49, Sta. Lucia went scoreless in the next four minutes while SMB unloaded 12 points of their own to stretch the margin to 61-48. Ryan Reyes made two free throws to snap the drought then knocked in a 3-pointer that made the count 53-61. But Hontiveros quickly responded with two straight 3s and Cortez added two of his own as the Beermen all but sealed the game, 73-53.

Nelbert Omolon scored 20 points, Reyes turned in 17 and Kelly Williams added 15 for Sta.Lucia which shot just 39 percent from the field. (DBC)
