Sta. Lucia Realtors' prized catch last year seems to be underperforming lately, especially in their last two games. Ryan Reyes’ numbers against Coca-Cola last 22 October and Air 21 last 24 October were surprising low for this 2008 Rookie of the Year. It is understandable to have an off night, but for two consecutive games? There may be something wrong here.
Looking back at Reyes’ average this conference, he started very strong and became a second offensive option in the Realtors rotation. In their first three games, Reyes averaged 15.0 points, 3.0 assists, 9.3 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 30.0 minutes per ball game. These numbers surpassed his average last year and it is, thus, not surprising to see his name being floated around as a possible member of the Philippine National Team.
However, these same numbers unexpectedly dropped in their last two assignments. Against Coca-Cola and Air21, the 25-year old former California State University player, can only churned in 2.5 points, 2.0 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals in 19.5 minutes of action. In short, he was terrible in the floor. He missed some very wide open shots, bumping at his teammates and committing errors while driblling the ball.
So, what gives? Did Mark Macapagal of Coca-Cola and Gary David of Air21 have his numbers?
There was a rumor that the whole team was afflicted with a mysterious flu during their game against Purefoods in Panabo City, Davao, but that game was more than 6 days before their humiliating loss to Air21. Besides, the SLR management officially acknowledged Nelbert Omolon as the only casualty of that disease.
Whatever the reasons for his sub-par performance, hopefully, it is not permanent. Coach Boyet Fernandez still has faith on his 6'2" guard.
When ask before what Reyes can give to the Realtors, Fernandez was quick to answer: "His intensity. He gives a hundred and fifty percent in every game. He will kill himself to get that ball, to win."
All SLR fans are hoping that this is still the case and that the “Energizer” can get his game back when they tackle the superstar-laden San Miguel Beermen on Thursday, 30 October 2008, 3:00 p.m at the Ynares Sports Arena, Pasig City.
