What is Holding Back Williams and Yeo?

On: 18 December 2008

Joseph Yeo vs Solomon Mercado

Can a team like Sta. Lucia Realtors have multiple MVP candidates and still be good in winning games? This question propped up after the decent averages of Kelly Williams and Joseph Yeo with one more game left for their team in the elimination. Their scoring complementation keeps on getting better and better each game.

The problem with Williams and Yeo is that after they perform well in a game, they go all Godfather Part III. Meaning, just when every SLR fans thought they are ready to go ... the two pull them back in.

Take for instance, the 100-95 pole-axing of erstwhile league-leader San Miguel Beermen last 19 November 2008. Yeo's numbers were delicious. He had 38 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals in just 31 minutes of action. Williams also had a breathtaking performance against Rain or Shine, which they lost. He had 31 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists. If they can manage to combine their efforts in one game, they would become a formidable duo as anybody will find in the PBA.

But that is just it. After getting everyone's hopes up, they will experience a scoring drought on their next game. Everyone can still recall the Realtors amazing 8-game winning run in the elimination round of last year's Philippine Cup, which they eventually won. Williams and Yeo were the dominant offensive options for their team. The game revolved around them. However, other teams noted that they are consistent in being inconsistent with their scoring. Williams played almost 39-40 minutes per ball game and this may have affected his shooting touch.

This does not mean that they are not scorers in the very essence of the word. When they are on, K-Will and the Ninja are exhilarating to watch in the floor. Nobody can stop them. However, as soon as it looks as if they are both getting on a roll, their shooting will go kablooey (this term best describe it all). Williams only averaged 18.5 percent from the 3-point arc on a 7-41 shooting.

All SLR fans need to see more ... not from them, but of them. If they can put a string of wins together starting with their last game in the elimination against Red Bull Barakos on 21 December, their supporters may see more of the dynamic duo in the Finals.
