Inspiring Words From Encarnado

Realtors' Third Place

Nearly a week has passed since defending the All-Filipino champion Sta. Lucia Realtors were dethroned by the Alaska Aces in the Philippine Cup of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). They managed to salvage a third place finish by beating the San Miguel Beermen, 99-97 on 28 January 2009, but the realization of failing to become the first back-to-back team to defend the title since Great Taste in 1985 remains a bitter pill to swallow.

Hence, team manager Buddy Encarnado decided to give everyone a 12-day break to be with their relatives and friends after the game against the Beermen. Hopefully, the break will give everyone a time to reflect and prepare themselves both emotionally and physically because the coaching staff is expected to give them a series of tough exercises that will make them a team to contend with in the next import-laden conference.

Encarnado's inspiring words at the dugout gave a hint of the things to come for the Realtors.

"… As a champion, we have upgraded ourselves champion. So I don’t want to hear that you are satisfied with this (third place)…,"

"… What I want you to be is to become a good player. A player who is not afraid to face its fears … It should be more intensity, so I keep pounding you guys every practice and huddle …"

"… We can’t afford to change players often most of the time because our pocket is not wide compare to other teams …"

"… Gathering the best players in the league will not guarantee you a championship, but a matured line-up which commits to become a better player will give us championship …"

"…It is not the question of how much money we have, but how big our heart is …"
