Crucial Game Up for SLR

On: 17 May 2009

Today's game between the Sta. Lucia Realtors (SLR) and the San Miguel Beermen will be very important to the former than the latter. The problem is that even if the Realtors win, their shot at gaining a crack at a playoff for an outright semi-finals berth in the Motolite PBA Fiesta Conference is still out of their hands.

Nevertheless, the Realtors are hoping that the Beermen won’t play it too seriously in their match-up after they have already clinched the first outright semi-finals slot. The game is scheduled today at 6:30 P.M. at the Cuneta Astrodome after another interesting match-up between the Purefoods Giants and the Burger King Whoppers at 4:00 P.M.

The Giants, the Whoppers and the Realtors all still have a long-shot chance of making the Top 2 with similar 7-6 (win-loss) records. Half of that mission belongs to them, yet the remaining part will fall on the outcome of Ginebra’s last two games in the 14-game eliminations.

The Gin Kings match against the Alaska Aces in a Phoenix Fuel-PBA On Tour game in Legazpi City in Albay was suspended because of slippery surfaced and will be rescheduled later. A victory by the Gin Kings will move the defending champions to within a win of claiming the second outright berth in the semi-finals.

However, if Ginebra falls, that’s when the waiting begins.

For the Realtors, they would rather think of what they have to do first, and then accept whatever fate has prepared for them later. The thing that they should focus on is to book that elusive win No. 8 to enable them to tie second-running Rain or Shine. If Ginebra fails to sweep its remaining pair of matches, a playoff is certain to determine which team will join San Miguel Beer as early semi-finalist.

But this will get very interesting when more than two teams will end up with 8-6 slates. If that happens, the team or teams with the lowest quotients will be eliminated for the playoff, leaving the ball clubs with the two highest quotients to square off in the one-game playoff.

However, first thing first. The Realtors have to win their game against the Berrmen even without Kelly Williams and take it from there. The Beermen may avoid risking injuries to its players by not playing with its full firepower, but it showed in their game against Barako Bull that they still mean business on the way to a 99-92 win.

Coach Boyet Fernandez knows, too, that a team carrying no pressure at all is a hard team to beat.

"No ifs or buts," said Fernandez, "the game is very crucial for us tomorrow (today)."
