Rookie Camp Starts Today

On: 19 June 2009

Starting today, players in the 2008 PBA Annual Draft will have a chance to display their abilities and skills when the league holds its traditional Rookie Camp until 23 August 2008 at the Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) gym.

So far there were 47 applicants to the draft and all of them are required to go through the two-day activity that showcases their physical and mental prowess. Specifically, the prospective applicants will have to go through a series of physical tests on Friday morning that includes doing push ups, sprints, sit ups, bench press, pull ups and parallel bars, aside from having their height, weight, wing span and vertical leap being measured.

In the afternoon (1:30 p.m to 3 p.m.), applicants will be grouped into two (big and small) and will be doing several drills demonstrating their agility (shuttle with passes), shooting (off a screen – flare screen and ball screen for small players and 1 minute back to the basket/ 1 minute elbow to elbow for the big ones) and dribbling skills (in-out, quick handle, between the legs, behind the back, step back 2 combination, 3 combination, shuffle).

They will also go through a sequence of fastbreak drills.

The big men will likewise be made to play 1 on 1 low post defense and 1 on 1 low post offense (dribble slide, up and under, one dribble pivot, drop step combination).

Capping the opening day is a two-part scrimmage where rookie prospects will be divided into four groups. Group 1 takes on Group 4 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. while Group 2 plays Group 3 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Activity in Day 2 also at the EAC gym is more confined on scrimmage plays beginning with the game between Group 1 and Group 2 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Group 3 vs Group 4 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Among the most notable names expected to be picked in the first cycle of the draft scheduled on 31 August at the Market Market Place in Taguig includes national team standout Gabe Norwood and Harbour Centre's deadly guard Solomon Mercado, and a bunch of amateur stalwarts such as Jeffrey Chan, TY Tang, Mark Borboran, Cholo Villanueva, NCAA MVP Kelvin dela Pena and shooters Jonathan Fernandez and Patrick Cabahug.

The final list will be known on Aug. 25, shortly after the PBA Commissioner's Office has completed screening the requirements submitted by all aspirants.
