Best Player of the Week: Kelly Williams

On: 08 April 2008

It has now become apparent the this is the year that Kelly Williams will break out as the total package.

After winning the rookie of the year award last year, the 6-foot-7 Sta. Lucia Realty forward was named thrice as the Best Player of Week last conference, adjudged as the Best Player of the All-Filipino Conference and now the Best Player of the week barely two weeks after the start of the PBA Fiesta Conference.

Sta. Lucia has gone 2-0 mainly because of the heroics of Williams, last year's top draft pick who has provided not just scoring, rebounding and defense but all the intangibles not reflected on the stats sheets.

Williams averaged team-best marks of 22.0 points and 10.5 rebounds in the Realtors last two games to prove his previous awards were no fluke.

"It’s a just a statement that he deserves the Best Player of the Conference the last time and he is out to prove that he’s worthy of that award,” said Realtors' coach Boyet Fernandez.

“As what I’d said in the past, Kelly can be an all-around player both in defense and offense and he is showing that right now for he already knows his role in our team,” Fernandez added.

Williams dedication to winning is evident when he went back to his parents’ home in Michigan following the Realtors’ Philippine Cup triumph, but instead of taking it easy, he used the three-week break to further develop his skills.

“He was often at the gym to lift weights and shoot around,” related Fernandez. “That’s why a rejuvenated Kelly came back to our practice.”
